LABORATORY PROFILEThe establishment of the State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices (SKLLMD) at South China University of Technology was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China in Oct, 2011 and it oﬃcially operated in 2013. In the same year, although still at its infancy stage, SKLLMD participated in the State Key Laboratory Assessment and was rated as one of the ﬁve“ Excellent” laboratories among the twenty-two materials-oriented state key laboratories.
The mission of SKLLMD is to establish itself as a national platform for research, education, innovation and technology development in optoelectronic materials and devices, and we are committed to provide important contributions to the growing demand of the economic development of China. e four key research areas in SKLLMD include 1) organic light emitting devices for display and lighting, 2) organic photovoltaic materials and devices, 3) advanced glass materials for optical bers and lasers, 4) bio-optoelectronic materials for imaging diagnosis and treatment. To support the interdisciplinary optoelectronic research in SKLLMD, we had established six experimental platforms equipped with state-of-the-art facilities with a total cost over 200M RMB. ese platforms are dedicated to the following areas including chemical synthesis, device fabrication and integration, ultrafast laser spectroscopy study, materials and devices characterization, biological detection, and theoretical calculation and simulation (to be established).
SKLLMD also aims to become the premier research and education resource in optoelectronic research and engineering at the world stage by not only recruiting senior and young talent scientists worldwide but also providing the best R&D environment to cultivate the next-generation workforce in this eld. Currently the laboratory consists of 57 permanent research staﬀs and among them 35 are professors, including 2 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 7 Chang Jiang Scholars of the Ministry of Education and 12 winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. ere are also about 200 graduate students with majority pursuing PhD degree in the lab.
SKLLMD has undertaken several important national R&D projects including 3 National Key Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), 1 Innovative Research Group Program of NSFC, and 15 State Key and Major Program of NSFC, with annual funding over 45 M. e laboratory had also generated a series of high impact R&D results and won several important awards including 2 Second Class Prize of National Natural Science Award, 1 Second Class Prize of State Technological Invention Award, and 5 provincial science and technology awards. Our publications are also widely recognized with one rated as “Top 10 Scientic Breakthroughs” in 2012 and three being selected as the “Top-100 Most Inuential International Journal Paper in China”.
SKLLMD also acts as a key platform to strengthen collaborations and academic exchanges between Mainland and international institutions to boost technological advancement in the country. rough the participation in the Programme of Introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities ( the “111” plan ), SKLLMD had establishment strong collaboration and partnership with the world-class laboratories in the organic/polymer optoelectronic eld. With the approval by the Ministry of Education, our international collaboration was further strengthened through the establishment of the Joint International Research Laboratory of Advanced Functional Materials in 2014.
With the strong support from our university and the government, SKLLMD and our colleagues and students will continue to strive for our ultimate goals of being research excellence and also being a world-class laboratory for basic and applied research, a national training base for research talents, a technology innovation center and the best place for academic exchanges in the eld of optoelectronic materials and devices.
Major Research AreasThe main laboratory research focuses on functional optoelectronic materials and devices, and their integration for novel applications, including light-emitting display, energy eﬃcient lighting, photovoltaic cells, glass ﬁber materials & lasers, optoelectronics and other biological applications.
